Future Plans
John Dewey, an influential philosopher when it came to reforming our education system, once said "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow” (Hare, 2011, p. 1). This applies to levels of teaching. In today's environment, the inability to leverage technology in the classroom is robbing our children and adults in different phases of their education. The use of technology in the classroom was one of my crusades while I was serving my second term on our local school board. It's also key to the instructional systems I evaluate with my job in Air Force technical training. As a result, my research project in EDRM 600 - Introduction to Research Methods focused on teachers views of how technology is incorporated in the classroom. As educational leaders, it's imperative that buy-n is achieved at all levels before spending limited resources. The future of our educational systems is going to be highly dependent upon the use of technology in the classroom to enhance the learning environment with the end-goal of facilitating learning.
My Possible Trails
Ralph Waldo Emerson's saying about not following the path but leaving a trail defines my thoughts on my next step in my goal of transforming technical training. Stepping off the path involves having the ability to think outside the box. Before I step off the path and leave a trail, I need to further my education with incorporating technology in the classroom. Furthering my education will not only help me with my professional job for the Air Force, it will also help me if I'm re-elected to serve on our local school board. I'm currently looking at two options. The first option is to obtain a Teaching with Technology and Distance Learning Certificate from Colorado State University. The second option is to pursue a Masters in Instructional Systems Technology from the University of Indiana.
